Purpose. To improve the accuracy of determining the amplitude of accommodation (AA) by proximetry through the use of an advanced proximeter and to develop a methodology for personalized management of AA assessment.
Methods. We prospectively examined 1420 patients from different age groups at routine optometric visits. We compared measurements of the AA by a conventional method of proximetry and advanced proximetry (using a device that we had developed) in the same patients. Advanced proximetry involves using Scheiner’s principle which improved the accuracy of image fixation on the retina.
Results. The sensitivity and specificity of advanced proximetry were 99.2% and 95.6%, respectively.
Conclusion. Advanced proximetry enables improving the efficacy of AA measurements in optometric patients and can be recommended for routine practice.
